Curious George Cake

Who doesn't love Curious George?  The books were some of my favorites as a kid.  Here is a cake for a Curious George loving 2 year old.  This cake is similar to the owl smash cake I made when my niece turned one.   Flat fondant figures are a good place to start with making figures out of fondant.  I like to add a little 3D (like the tongue and balloons) fun.

Old West Birthday Party

We couldn't have had a better day for our old west themed birthday party.  I started to re-think our plan as we hauled load after load of props and treats up a steep hillside, but the party was perfect and I wouldn't have changed a thing.
The invitation set the tone for the party...and the time!  Everyone thought it was clever to start the party at 11:55am, the time on the pocket watch.Come see all of the party details...

Tween Room Drapes

The new drapes we just added are made from the fabric I ordered before I started her room.  It was the drapery fabric on a season of the Bachelor or Bachelorette.  I had a heck of a time trying to figure out how to track down the fabric.  I searched the ABC website and Google and it finally let me to Young House Love.  Sherry had a screen shot from the show and I asked if she knew where to find the fabric.  She directed me to Premier Prints. The walls of this room had been painted chocolate brown and lime green for 2 years, so the print and colors were perfect.

#WhyILeft and Why It Is So Important For You To Be There

“Can you believe she married him?”  I had heard the question for the 5th or 6th time this week in reaction to the Rice domestic violence video surfacing, and to be honest, it was my reaction at first.  I quickly caught myself.  That’s the problem with abuse; it is so difficult to understand unless you are living or have experienced the abuse/control cycle.  It's so easy to judge.  You don’t know the controls, the threats, the manipulation and everything else that may be at play in the background.  “Yes, I can believe she married him.”  My response was met with confused and even eye raising expressions.

After reading the #whyistayed and #whyileft tweets this week- bare bones exposed across Twitter- I created my own...

Chocolate Horse Pops & S'mores Pops

The original cake design for the covered wagon cake, was a horse drawn covered wagon.  I knew I did not want to sculpt horses for the cake, so I searched Amazon for a chocolate horse mold.  This is the mold I found for a whoppin' 2 bucks.  The cake design changed, so we came up with another idea for the chocolate horse mold- we'd make Giddy Up Pops!  The mold isn't made for pops, but we figured it out...

Ruffled Covered Wagon Cake

She came up with the idea of a covered wagon cake for her 10th birthday all on her own.  "A covered wagon?  Like the old west?" She said, "Yes, like the olden days." She pulled out her party notebook with party details designed around the "olden days" covered wagon theme.  Okay.  She didn't want a cake shaped like a covered wagon and she liked the ruffle cake I made in July, so we planned blue ombre fondant ruffle layered cake with a covered wagon on top.

Teal and Burlap Rag Wreath

We made this rag wreath to coordinate with the rag bunting for my daughter's 10th birthday party. The party was an old west theme and the wreath tied right in with the natural setting.  To learn how to make a wreath like this and to see more of the bunting, continue reading...
