Fourth of July Blueberry & Cherry Bars

This is a dessert my mom has made for years, that I had never tried to make...until she went out of town...and I couldn't get the recipe from her. The vanilla cake has a fine, light texture and it is perfect delivery vehicle for the cherry or blueberry pie filling. I've only had cherry bars, but cherry filling isn't my favorite, so I thought I'd explore with blueberry.  Turns out, this is the perfect festive Fourth of July dessert to take to your holiday outdoor BBQ.
I searched around for a recipe and ended up almost pulling together my mom's recipe. I'll share the recipe I made:
1 3/4 cup of sugar
1 cup of softened butter
3 eggs
1 1/2 t baking powder
1 t vanilla extract
1/4 t almond extract
Cream the butter sugar and eggs until smooth. Add the vanilla and almond extracts. Sift the flour and baking powder and mix until combined.
Set aside about 2 cups of the batter. The pan I used is 10x15. If you use a smaller pan, you can set aside less of the batter. Spray the baking pan or butter/flour the pan. (I used spray).
After pressing the batter evenly, spread a can of cherry pie filling and a can of blueberry pie filling.
You can always just make one flavor. The blueberry filling went much further than the cherry filling.
Dollop the remaining batter on top of the pie filling.
Bake 350F for 45 minutes, or until the top turns golden brown.
Allow to cool and then slice the bars.
I arranged some of the bars on a flat white platter to resemble the American flag.
 Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
This plate went to my dad for Father's Day last weekend!
The rest of the bars went with me to a party and they disappeared quickly. I had several people come up to me and say, "You HAD to be the one who made these bars." I think I have a good baking reputation in the community from people seeing my stuff on Facebook.

Lemon Blueberry Crepes - clean up made easier with Scotch-Brite!

I love making crepes for my kids for breakfast. It is their favorite breakfast and they'll eat them every single day. Today, I mixed it up and made a lemon blueberry crepe. I am usually rushing around the kitchen to get the crepes made and running out the door to get to work with the mess left behind. The dried crepe batter is a bit like cleaning up plaster and I'm left scraping it away from the counter with my fingernails. I found a great product to help with clean up- even the days I leave the dried mess behind. Come check it out and find the crepe recipe later in the post.

Green Tea Party - Kale Quinoa Crispy Avocado Salad and Matcha Cupcakes

Ahhhh....Spring- the mixed weather, the allergies, the last few weeks of school, the weekend doubleheader baseball games. I woke up this morning to the sound of thunder and pulled the covers back over my head. So much for a trail run followed by a bike ride on the way to afternoon baseballs games. Perfect day for sleeping in and trying some new recipes, instead....

Tween & Teen AcneFree in 1-2-3!

Let's talk tween and teen skin care. My daughter started breaking out in the 3rd grade and it has not cleared. I bought a pack of teen facials at the day spa down the street from my house. I've brought home a few products for her to use over the years and nothing has seemed to clear her complexion. It doesn't really matter what she is using if she isn't even using the product! Time to get a routine with proper skin care...and it didn't take long!

I have ordered Personal Creations baskets in the past and I love their personalized Easter Baskets. How to Make a Dreamcatcher

I have been drawn to dreamcatchers for many years and this is a project I have had in my head for at least a year or so. My great-grandmother used to sit and crochet doilies for hours. I would watch as the thread moved across her fingers and hooks. She wouldn't even have to look down at what she was doing. It amazed me because I don't have great finger dexterity. Forget about french braiding- I can't figure out what loops where. I've tried to crochet or knit...maybe one day. I knew I wanted to incorporate one of her doilies into a handmade dream-catcher to hang in my bedroom.

Cutting Edge Indian Arrows Wall Stencil

I didn't realize how bare my master bathroom had been until I finally figured out what I wanted to do with the walls.  I knew I wanted to paint, but didn't want to commit to a color.  The bathtub, sinks and tile surrounding the bathtub & shower are bright white, but the walls/trim are a creamy white. As soon as I saw the Indian Arrows all-over wall stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils, I purchased the stencil from my phone.
