- ½ tsp (2.5 ml) kosher salt
- ¼ tsp (1.25 ml) black pepper, freshly ground
- sourdough bread, halved and sliced ½ inch thick
- hummus, store-bought or homemade
- radishes, fresh, sliced
Instructions
- Tuna Preparation: Flake tuna in a mixing bowl, preserving its olive oil, breaking it into fine, uniform pieces using a fork.
- Tuna Mixture: Blend tuna with diced celery, minced onion, chopped cornichons, lemon juice, mayonnaise, reserved olive oil, mustard, kosher salt, and black pepper until thoroughly combined.
- Flavor Infusion: Refrigerate tuna mixture for 2-3 hours to allow flavors to meld and intensify.
- Hummus Creation: Process chickpeas with reserved liquid, tahini, garlic, lemon juice, hot sauce, and salt in a food processor until achieving a coarse, rustic puree. Adjust consistency by adding extra liquid if needed.
- Hummus Refinement: Refrigerate hummus for several hours to enhance flavor profile, adjusting seasonings before serving.
- Sandwich Assembly: Toast bread slices until golden-brown and crisp. Spread a generous layer of prepared hummus on each slice.
- Final Presentation: Layer chilled tuna salad over hummus-coated bread and garnish with thinly sliced radishes for a peppery, decorative finish.
Notes
- Flavor Infusion: Refrigerate tuna mixture for 2-3 hours to allow ingredients to blend and develop deeper, more complex taste.
- Texture Tip: Process hummus just until coarse for rustic, authentic Mediterranean texture instead of completely smooth.
- Oil Preservation: Save olive oil from tuna can to enhance overall sandwich flavor and add richness to the mixture.
- Seasoning Balance: Taste and adjust hummus seasonings before serving to ensure perfect salt, lemon, and garlic harmony.
